@ Your Library: Embracing technology keeps library current

After hearing on CBC this morning what the library in Merritt in the Thompson Nicola Regional District library system offers for loan, I feel our libraries are somewhat kindred spirits. Along with encouraging literacy, education, information exchange and entertainment, they have decided to embrace what they referred to as extreme learning.

From the Centre: Another grand opening at complex

Remember when I asked you to keep June 26, 2010, free for our grand opening of the community complex? OK, didn’t think so, but in case you missed it, we are having another grand opening! This time it is for our long awaited fitness area, which resides in the indoor track space looking down into the pool. All plans are pointed at Feb. 26 from 1-4 p.m. to see all the equipment and try it out as well as various demonstrations involving health and fitness.

This is the Life: The start of a new era

It might be an exaggeration to label Friday’s inauguration of a new Lower Kootenay Band chief and new band councilors as historic, but it certainly was significant. Thought for Food: Getting fresh with the locals

“A record year.” This is the opening line to the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition’s report on the stellar success of the 2010 Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. Record number of vendors, record number of patrons, record sales. The report, created and stunningly presented by market manager Jen Comer, is a testament to the hard work, dedication and sheer determination of a devoted group of people fiercely committed to a vision of a Creston Valley farmers’ market whose time had come.

Nursery Notes: Mid-winter brings thoughts of spring

Deep winter. Short days, cool weather. I confess that I need to consult the calendar and give some thought to exactly what day it is. This is the time of year gardeners like to dream of spring, what new kinds of tasty fruits they would like to plant this growing season and, perhaps, an apple that keeps really well. Two new varieties are Nicola and Aurora Golden Gala. Or a different coloured pear, perhaps a red Bartlett.
