From the Centre: Changes keep community complex a busy place

I was grazing through the BC Recreation and Parks magazine the other day and saw an update from a leisure facility in Kitimat that mentioned a bait locker program. Of course, being the avid, yet non-productive fisherman I am, my first thought is that you could buy worms or maggots after a few laps or a dip in the hot tub and head right to the lake.

Think before condemning West Creston bottling plant

After reading the articles and letters to the editor in recent Advance issues, I am shocked and dismayed to discover that the Spetifore family is nothing more than a bunch of underhanded vicious scoundrels that have been working with a group of lazy rubber stamping Regional District of Central Kootenay people and a sleazy prospective buyer to help them bring doom and destruction to our valley.

Goat Style Bike Festival is up for grabs

As a followup to the article in the Advance about Goat Style Bike Festival (“Goat Style likely to move on”, Feb. 10 Advance, page 1), I felt I needed to respond to a few points.

The Voice of Experience: Get educated, write concerns to government

As I sat gazing over the peaceful valley below where I live, the radio was going hysterical about the situation in Egypt. Later, the TV showed me the chanting, flag-waving crowds packing Cairo’s Tahrir Square. I couldn’t help comparing the two scenes.

La Dolce Vita: Musician creates vineyard magic

In Greek mythology, Hermes stole cattle from Apollo, then gave him his lyre, made from a tortoise shell, to remediate the crime. In turn, Apollo presented the recalcitrant thief with a caduceus, or staff. The caduceus is often depicted entwined by a pair of snakes. Add a set of wings and result is a symbol of commerce.

Community partnerships are defined as a relationship where two or more parties, having compatible goals, form an agreement to work together in a mutually beneficial manner, often doing things that might not be possible alone.

Creston doctors needs a solid plan

I have read the letter to the editor from Jacqueline MacKay of Vancouver, a medical student and apparently a former resident of Creston. Of course I do not know the source of the information she had on which she based her comments to the effect that Creston would be an inhospitable place to practice medicine.

This is the Life: They can do better

Once upon a time in a far away place there was a city called Athens. It was across the Mediterranean Sea, about 1,100 kilometres, as the ibis flies, from a city called Cairo.

@ Your Library: Board member Maddess missed at Creston library

There have been changes in the library board since I arrived six years ago, but the board members I worked with when I first arrived will be the ones I will remember the most. Several of those members are still active on the board and are my anchors. One of those first board members, Norma Maddess, was more than an anchor.

Brain Gym is another useful tools for teachers

I agree with Mr. Dyck that parents can and should take every opportunity to know more about what their children are learning in school, and about the public school system in general.
