Brain Gym is another useful tools for teachers

I agree with Mr. Dyck that parents can and should take every opportunity to know more about what their children are learning in school, and about the public school system in general.

Nursery Notes: Small fruit creates world of possibilities

Most folks have heard of elderberry wine or rhubarb crisp. Did you know that the French make a brandy from black currants? How about a Russian-made marmalade from the fruit of the sea buckthorn? Historically, native tribes used saskatoon berries in pemmican.

A Zen’s-Eye View: Drive all blames into one

We live in a society and a world filled with blames and complaints of all kinds. When something goes wrong — and something always goes wrong — we look for something or someone to blame. Liberals blame the Conservatives; the Conservatives blame the Liberals. Environmentalists blame mining and industry. Our court system is built on blaming and punishing. In domestic squabbles wives blame their husbands; husbands blame their wives.

Out There: What’s happened to B C’s provincial bird?

It is not often that a bird shows up that is so distinctly two birds put together in one. It happened in early December at a bird feeder near Boswell. It seemed to be a definite cross or hybrid of a Steller’s jay (Cyanocitta stelleri), B.C.’s provincial bird, and a blue jay (Cyanocitta crestata), more common east of the Rockies. These are two distinct species, at least according to taxonomists.
