Creston Wave find success at home meet

The Wave was back in the water on June 23rd and 24th for their home meet.

The Wave was back in the water on June 23rd and 24th for their home meet. With 35 swimmers competing, the club finished second overall in team points, and 9 swimmers earned individual medals.

Andon Webb and Zhoe Bailey were the 6 & Under swimmers for the Wave. Both swam great 25m-races in their first meet ever.

Lauren Short, Danae Damery, Aleena Ziefflie, Teaghan Merkley, and Azra MacVicar all competed in division 1. All girls swam several best times. Damery, Ziefflie, Merkley and MacVicar also made up the division-1 girls relay team that finished first in both the IM and Freestyle relays.

Along with the 5 division 1 girls, the Wave had 3 division 1 boys. Ethan Bailey and Eastin Severtson swam great races. Bailey’s best was the 50m Freestyle, while Severtson swam well in the 50m Backstroke. Alex Hopkins also swam in division 1, placing top 3 several times, which earned him the silver medal for their category.

In division 2 there were 6 swimmers competing for the Wave. Luna Poirier was another swimmer competing for the first time. She swam a great 100m Freestyle along with Skylah Schiffke and Sophie Spears. All 3 girls had several best times each.

Oliver Valdal continued to improve with best times in his 100m IM, 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, and 100m Freestyle. Ethan Pelly and Callum Ziefflie both swam several best times as well, finishing top 3 in all of their races. Pelly earned silver and Ziefflie earned gold in division 2 boys.

The Wave had 4 division 3 girls competing who also made up the winning relay team. The team consisted of Ava Bailey, Daedra Damery, Kiffy Thompson, and Natasha Hopkins. All girls had great individual races, and Hopkins even finished within the top 4 several times.

With only 2 division 3 boys, Xander Webb and Connar Schofer represented the Wave well. Webb swam his 100m IM in 2:24.94. Schofer swam a great 50m Breaststroke in 58.95, breaking the minute-mark.

Anna Morris and Jake Wiens swam in division 4. Morris, in her first meet of the season, swam a best time in 5 of her 6 events. Wiens also swam 5 best times, highlighted by his 3:04.27 in his 200 IM. Wiens finished first in 5 races and won the gold medal for division 4 boys.

Clare Storey and Maryn Wiens both competed in division 5. Storey’s best race of the weekend was her 100m Backstroke, in which she took off almost 3 seconds for a time of 1:30.50. Wiens’ best swim was her third-place 200m IM in 3:16.43.

Jeff Roelofse, also in division 5, swam 2 best times and placed top 3 in each of his 6 races to earn the bronze medal in the category.

The Wave had a strong showing in division 6 and 7. In division 6 Emily Ritter-Riegling, Kailey Morris, and Carter Pelly competed. Ritter-Riegling swam 3 best times in her first meet of the year. Morris and Pelly both placed top 3 in most of their races, which earned Morris bronze and Pelly gold in the category.

In division 7 Kylee Pemberton, Katelyn Wiens, and coach Emily Simpson competed.

Pemberton’s meet was highlighted by her best time of 1:45.64 in the 100m Breaststroke. Simpson and Wiens exchanged first and second place in all of their races. Simpson won silver and Wiens won gold in the category.

Coach Kieran Simpson competed in division 8, finishing top 5 in his races, his best being second in the 200m IM.

Coming off their best team finish in the last few seasons, the Wave hope to continue their success. They now have 2 weekends off before a meet in Kimberley, BC on July 13th and 14th.
