Creston Valley Tennis Club members ushered out the summer with a smash during a season-ending doubles tournament Sept. 24.

Brilliant blue skies and 30-degree temperatures — the last of the year — provided perfect conditions for a daylong event attended by 20 players, with ages ranging from 11 to senior citizens.

The 14 men and six women competed in an ongoing series of 10-minute mini-matches, each with a different partner, earning ribbons for every victory.

At the end of the day, Clayton Fenrick and Brian Bell had amassed the most ribbons (10) to share the men’s title, while Kim Harding topped the women’s division with eight ribbons. Ani McDowell and Irmgard Truemper tied for second with seven apiece.

It was the first such event for the club since a similar tournament was first held in 2010. The response was so enthusiastic that the club is considering holding the tournaments more frequently in 2012.

The club is open to new members of all ages, with perks including fun tournaments, club nights, instruction (for youths) and access to the tennis courts for night play. Membership dues are used to pay for maintenance and upgrading of the courts.
