Students from Canyon-Lister, Erickson and Adam Robertson elementary, Wildflower and Yaqan Nukiy schools took part in the fifth annual School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) youth powwow yesterday, joined by students from throughout School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake), as well as other nearby districts.
The annual event — which outgrew the Prince Charles Secondary School gymnasium and moved to the Creston and District Community Complex last year — is the culmination of a lot of work by students in the Aboriginal education program, who spend time creating regalia and learning about their Aboriginal roots.
This year's powwow also saw gifts handed out to some of the program's supporters and volunteers, including CLES principal David Falconer, who is leaving the district after this school year.
