Canyon residents Kenneth and Signe Miller were among the first recipients of the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers (replacing the Caring Canadian Award received by 13 Creston Valley residents last month), which they were awarded by Gov. Gen. David Johnston in a ceremony in Ottawa on April 12.

Kenneth’s dedication to good causes has included five years on the Creston Valley Community Housing Society, where he succeeded in getting six low-rent family apartments built, doing much of the fencing and out-building construction himself. He also started the now-defunct Citizens On Patrol.

Signe has been a board member of the Creston-Kootenay Foundation for three years and actively participates in ongoing activities and projects with the Canyon Community Association.
