One of our library board members is claiming equal recognition with the Eckersleys’ always special cake donation at the Friends of the Library annual garden party and book sale at Morris Garden Centre on Sunday. Our board member admitted she could not say with complete honesty she actually made the cake; however, as the cake was done by one very talented Amy White, who is, for the time being, sort of a family member, the board member could take some of the credit. The cake, by the way, was in the shape of an open book with the words “Once upon a time” on the left page with a very edible and beautiful fairytale picture on the opposite page. All of the baked goods were fantastic, even if by proxy, and a very heartfelt thanks to all the bakers and decorators.

The weather was absolutely perfect, the greenhouses were a sea of green growing things, the cakes and cupcakes were outstanding and the band’s music selections could not have been any better. The Friends of the Library, the friends of the Friends, and board members were outstanding once again in organizing, executing and putting away this annual event that, this year, raised almost $1,000 for the library. It is always a highlight of the year for me and always successful.

The Creston Community Band, led by Monte Anderson, guaranteed an invitation to play at next year’s garden soiree. We would like to thank all the band members who joined us at the greenhouse and we all look forward to your next event. Some of you reading this may not know the community band is available at a very reasonable rate — free — for any event you might be having. I believe they will be part of the opening celebrations for the Lawrence Lavender Reading Garden. There will be more information on that later.

There must be dozens of library board members, staff and chief librarians who have been connected with the Creston and District Library but the list of Friends and those who volunteer time to the library has remained relatively constant and to me, maintain a stable presence and a steadfastness that can be relied and counted on always. I have said it before and I hope I can say it many more time: We cannot thank you enough.

Our last night at the opera for this season is coming up at the end of May. If it arrives on time, Eugene Onegin will be the grand finale. Our much beloved host, Jacqueline Marie, has let me know she is moving out of Creston and that will her last night presenting the opera. Call me selfish but I am not at all happy about that, I know she will be extremely difficult to replace if not impossible. Another library volunteer I cannot thank enough.

Ann Day is the chief librarian at the Creston and District Public Library.
