What happened to the old Canada?

Together with the powerful corporate interest, the rich and mighty Harper is making the Canada we know and love unrecognizable...

To the Editor:

It always warmed my heart every Canada day to see the crowds in Ottawa cheering and waving our beautiful maple leaf flag, expressing their love for Canada. I, too, love my Canada very much.

This year, it is for me a sweet-sour celebration. I am asking Prime Minister Harper, “Where is my Canada?” The highly respected Clayton Moore, CM, QC, said what I also feel, “Canada has become a country that I barely recognize. Since when did this country bully charities, trash environmental laws, thumb its nose at the international community and silence its own citizens?”

Together with the powerful corporate interest, the rich and mighty Harper is making the Canada we know and love unrecognizable — democracy be damned. Harper’s contempt for Parliament, democracy and his rule by ideology cannot go on forever. The government is entrusted to act on behalf of its citizens and every voice should count.

I am one of many Canadians that have experienced dictatorship and am thankful that I could find refuge in this generous country. It is my hope that Canadians will come out of their apathy and complacency and resolve to bring back the Canada we know and love. Canada’s brave soldiers have fought and died to preserve freedom and democracy.
