Nursery Notes: Add a little fragrance to your garden

Watering in the greenhouse can be a real treat...

Watering in the greenhouse can be a real  treat. I am greeted by the fragrance of a multitude of flowers. I guess the moisture really helps to bring it out. The sweet smell of the scented Stocks. Snapdragons that smell like candy. Pansies, Petunias and of course Sweet Alyssum.

I think it’s a great idea to plant a few of these by the front door. How about putting a few into the flower pots out on the back deck. What a great surprise for your dinner guests to find out what smells so great by the dinner table.

Around the nursery Purple Broom, Cytisus purpureus makes a great plant for hot and dry areas. It also has a lovely fragrance.

The nickel size blossoms of the Purple Leaf Sand Cherry are out and they too smell great. Double white Lilacs and even the common purple ones make a great cut flower to bring into the house. In the nursery there are all kinds of great looking flowers to discover especially in the Perennial house.

There are at least a dozen perennials good for hot and dry locations in flower right now. These are by and large completely deer resistant and give you a great little plant for the price of a flavored coffee. Lots of people have been really pleased with the ambiance of the place. We saw a lot of really happy folks out this past weekend.

Remember that there is still all kinds of time to plant containerized nursery stock and the mixed weather really helps to get plants established.

Wishing you all the best in your gardening endeavors.
