I think the best mayor Creston ever had was Lela Irvine. She was an old Crestonite who stuck to her guns about issues such as time change.

I remember her and I chatting about time change on the phone one day. I told her that’s what puts Creston on the map. She said, “Exactly! We are in the centre of the Kootenays. That’s why we are not east or west Kootenay, but Central Kootenay.”

Now people say we should get on central time. That’s not what she meant. She, like me, never wanted to change time. We decided that most of the people that wanted to change time were newcomers. Now when I say newcomers, I mean people who have only lived here 20 years or less.

We both decided that day that they made a mistake moving to Creston. They should have moved either to Cranbrook or Nelson — then they would have been able to change their time twice a year.

Then you hear, “But it is so confusing.” What is so confusing about it? The time never changes in Creston.

Then you hear, “Well, I have to get up two-and-a-half hours earlier to go see my doctor in Trail because of the one-hour difference.” Well, now’s the time to get a doctor in Cranbrook, and you get to sleep in for two-and-a-half hours. Nothing to it, eh?

Let’s not change Creston.
