John Kettle put the “people” back in politics. He set the bar for all Regional District of Central Kootenay directors for communication with his constituents. He lived on his phone. He attended thousands of local meetings. He invented the newsletter for his area, to give residents a place to promote their activities and get the latest information on rural issues — something the local paper does not do effectively.

If you think fire protection for all residents, safe water and community halls and parks are not “quality of life” issues, then you can’t appreciate John’s 12 years of service. If you don’t enjoy driving on newly paved surfaces in Lister, Canyon and Erickson, then you can shoot your mouth off about John being friendly to the provincial Liberals. If you’ve never run for office yourself because you don’t care that much, then you need to think before you write criticism in the paper.

John Kettle sheltered all of Area B, all 5,000 residents, under his big, black hat. Thanks, John!
