ISIS must be defeated to preserve preserving democracy, freedom and world peace

ISIS must be defeated just as Allies conquered fascism in Second World War, says Creston letter writer Allan Clement...

To the Editor:

In the 25 years since the end of the Cold War in 1991, when communism was the enemy, the world has been undergoing tremendous changes, a process that continues to this day. I believe society as a whole is on the verge of even more great and wonderful things.

But first and foremost, this evil force known as ISIS must be defeated at all costs for the sake of preserving democracy, freedom and world peace — just as the Allies had conquered fascism during the Second World War — and hopefully someday it may be possible to render all wars obsolete, which would be a good thing for us homo sapiens, and Earth in general.

To conclude on something completely different, I think it’s great that relations with the United States and Cuba are improving, especially after more than 50 years of animosity between these two countries. Now, if only the leadership of North Korea could be persuaded to dismantle its nuclear weapons program, the world would be a much safer place! I also believe peace can be achieved in the Middle East, between the Israelis and Palestinians, and that sometime in the near future, women in Saudi Arabia and Iran may be granted equal status alongside the men, including the subcontinent of India. This would be wonderful progress indeed, considering I am very conservative. (I don’t believe in the status quo, because it is outdated, counterproductive and serves absolutely no purpose in the 21st century.)

Anyway, I would like to wish a happy 149th birthday to our beautiful country of Canada on July 1 (but I suspect you already knew that). Wait until next year when she turns 150 — that will be a huge celebration!
