Creston Valley must develop solution for visiting fruit pickers

Canyon Community Association seeking collaborative solution to situation, says president Deb Nelius...

To the Editor:

The Canyon Community Association mandate is to provide social and recreational opportunities to the residents of Canyon and beyond, and operates with a very limited budget. The cherry harvest workers who stay at the unsanctioned bridge camp used and continue to use our bathroom and shower facilities, overloading the infrastructure and substantially increasing maintenance costs, which diverts resources away from our mandate.

There is no blame on anyone or any organization; this is a product of the agricultural face of our beautiful valley.

This is not a Canyon or Area B situation. This is a Creston Valley issue that requires a valleywide solution and that is why the CCA has now been five years proactively working with many others, including Kootenay Employment Services, Regional District of Central Kootenay director Tanya Wall and Fields Forward, to find a collaborative solution for this convoluted situation.
