Conservative ads attack common decency, voter intelligence

With their latest attack ads the Conservatives have hit a new low, says letter writer Kuya Minogue...

To the Editor:

I didn’t think it was possible, but with their latest attack ads the Conservatives have hit a new low. I thought they had reached bottom with their attacks on Canada’s lakes, on freedom of speech for Canada’s scientists and on democratic process in parliamentary debate. And I haven’t even mentioned the attacks on their own appointees and staff in the Senate and election fraud scandals. But these older attacks are nothing compared to their newest attack ads.

By borrowing imagery from terror-invoking ISIS propaganda they are doing what many critics have condemned as a violation of laws built into their own anti terror bill. In these new ads, we see Caucasians in orange suits lined up awaiting decapitation, we see four men bound together in a cage that is sinking into deep water and we see the horrifying black and white ISIS flag flying high in shot after shot. Are you terrified enough to vote Conservative yet? Are you buying into Harper’s apocalypse?

This ad attacks more than Mr. Harper’s kinder and gentler political rivals. It attacks common decency, the intelligence of the average voter and the possibility that we can feel safe in our homes and in our communities without Harper and his Harbots to “beat ’dem ISIS down.”

Don’t drink the Kool-Aid, dear voters. Don’t do what MP David Wilks has done and abandon your principles to fear of reprisal for standing up to them, and to the illusion of self-interest. Don’t vote Conservative.

Kuya Minogue
