“Are you or have you ever been a member of the Bloc Québécois?” is simply playing dirty politics, which doesn’t do anything for Canadian unity.

Yes, Bill, I too have heard it before and it was 1952 at the Canadian immigration office in Germany. I had risked my life and escaped from the Communist/Marxist brutal dictatorship of East Germany. After applying for immigration to Canada, I was asked in the first interview by the official, “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist party?” I was 23 at the time.

People from all over the world have come here and are still coming to live in a free country and have likely been involved in all kinds of political activities before coming here. We have left our past behind and have become Canadian citizens and contributed to this great country.

Anybody who was living under a dictatorship before is likely very sensitive to politicians who try to force their ideology on us and forget that the parliament of Canada belongs to the people of Canada. Brave Canadians have fought and died for freedom in many parts of the world. We owe it to them and to future generations to keep our beloved Canada strong and free. We, the people, have the power to make a real difference and should always strive to create a better community, a better world.
