Verna Olga Holmes passed away on July 19, 2013

at the age of 79 years at Swan Valley Lodge, Creston, BC after a lengthy illness.

Verna was born on a farm near Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan on December 15, 1933. At a young age she moved to the Creston Valley, where in 1953 she married the late John Dobko. She raised three children and was a renowned market gardener.

In 1984, Verna married Ted Holmes in a private ceremony surrounded by their loving children. Together they built a beautiful home, where they nurtured their blended family and celebrated many special holidays. Verna and Ted lived a full life together; curling, travelling, renovating, gardening and even raising cattle. Verna had a forty-four year career at the Packing Shed. She also worked as a first-aid attendant and a BC ambulance driver. Later in life, she enjoyed going to the casino.


Verna was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Fanny Popoff; brothers Alex Popoff and John McKishen; sisters Polly Vlasoff and Mary Parkhill.

She is survived by her husband Ted Holmes; children Tom Dobko (Donna), Lori-Ann Gilchrist (Bill), and Teresa Hall; step-children Doreen Holmes (Brad) and Darryl Holmes; ten grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.

Verna will be remembered for her kindness and trust in others, and always finding the goodness in people.
