Mattie Marie Bates (nee Clark) passed away after a lengthy illness on March 24, 2010 in New Denver, BC at the age of 86 years.

Mattie was born on March 5, 1924 in Heart Lake, AB to parents James and Hilda Clark and she was educated at the Summerhill School in the Endiang community.

Mattie was raised in the farming community of Endiang until she married Earl Bates in 1943. During the war they moved around BC and when Earl went overseas for duty, Mattie returned to the farm. After the war, they bought farm land in the Endiang area where they farmed until moving to Fernie, BC in 1972 and then to Creston, BC in 1980 to enjoy retirement.

Mattie was a member of the Royal Purple, Eagles, The Senior Citizens Club and Legion Ladies where she was actively involved and held various positions within the organizations. In addition she volunteered at the Foot Clinic for 20 years, did some hospice care, and volunteered at the Hospital Auxiliary. She played cards, darts, bowled and attended most events held in Creston.


She was predeceased by her parents, James and Hilda Clark; brothers, Carl, Ingvor, Louis and George; sister, Ellen Farwell; husband, Earl Bates; son Regional Bates; son-in-law, Allan Bergman and grandson, Blaine Trout.


She was survived by one sister, Gertrude Ewing of Spruce Grove, AB; children, Virginia Wynder of Erskine, AB, Heather Davidson (Jim) of Nakusp, BC, Randy Bates of Delta, BC and Keith Bates of Creston, BC; ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandsons, one great-granddaughter, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.


A Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 10th at the Legion Hall in Creston, BC at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Carl of the Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church officiating.
