Katie Kryger

August 9, 1926 ~ December 23, 2013

Leokadia (Katie) was the first born of Edmund and Emma Dotzlaf near Warsaw, Poland. They immigrated to Canada in June 1928 and homesteaded in the Gardenview area. She attended school and church and helped on her parents’ farm near the Kristof Kryger farm. As a result, Katie met her sweetheart Oswald (Ossie) Kryger and they married on June 26, 1946. Katie and Ossie farmed in the Barrhead and Gardenview areas where they raised their four sons and were active in various church ministries. Katie and Ossie semi-retired to Stony Plain and then retired to Creston, BC, several years later. They often visited Kryger family members and friends.

After Ossie’s passing in 1997, Katie volunteered with the Serenity Group and the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) and was a caregiver to Ed Shannon of Creston. Katie’s calendar was full of events, including the Hot Lunch Ministry at Creston New Life Christian Church. Katie’s final move was back to Barrhead in July 2013 and into the Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Katie is survived and will be sadly missed by her four sons Oscar (Irma), Larry (Lynn), Delbert (Helen), and Edmund (Trudy); 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was an aunt to many nieces and nephews and sister-in-law to Ollie, Hilda (Allan), Anna, Josie, and Lily (Herb).

Katie was predeceased by her infant sister Elsie; unnamed infant twins; 25-month-old son Kenneth Rodney Kryger in 1953; parents; younger brother Bruno in 1976; and husband of 51 years, Ossie, on December 3, 1997, whom she dearly missed until her passing day.

The family is grateful for everyone’s prayerful support and sympathy. The family thanks staff at BHCC for the care given during her last days.

The Celebration of Life for Katie Kryger was at the Barrhead Church of God (5134-46 St.) with Pastor Ryan Sturge officiating, at 1:00 pm on December 27, 2013.

Interment at Gardenview Community Cemetery Friday, December 27, 2013 at 10:00 am.
