Katharine (Kay) Esther Johannesen (nee Millar), age 93 years passed away December 20, 2014 at the Creston Valley Hospital.

Kay was born to John and Hazel Millar on January 2, 1921 in Cranbrook, BC.

Kay lived in Elko, BC the first five years and then in Calgary, where she received her formal education.

Kay was employed by the Canadian Pacific Telegraphs for many years, including leave to join the R.C.A.F. from 1943 – 1946.

Kay met and married Bernhard (Bernie) Johannesen and they moved to Creston in 1972 where she was the Secretary of the Blossom Festival for three years, and of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Creston Unit for 17 years. She managed the office at Creston Valley Wildlife Interpretation Centre for 10 years. She also helped her husband run their orchards and mobile home parks.

Kay and Bernie loved curling, bowling, and camping. They also liked to travel, and visited Bernie’s relatives in Denmark many times before Bernie passed away in 1990.


Kay will be dearly missed by her son Sigurd Johannesen (Honora) and grandchildren Lillian Bowker (Richard), and Malcolm Johannesen (Sonya), and great grandchildren Theresa, Declan, Connor, Theo, and Gemma.

A graveside service was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tuesday December 30, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Rick Bettig Celebrant. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
