In Loving Memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Karen Anne Riehl (nee Samuelson) passed away on January 16, 2022, in Lister, BC at the age of 79 years.
Karen was born in Creston, BC on August 11, 1942, to Godfrey and Minnie Samuelson. She was the second child of five and since her father was usually working at logging camps, it was up to her mother and the children to look after the farm and home chores. Karen often told fond stories of her childhood, growing up in Canyon surrounded by her extended family and friends.
Karen completed grade 13 at Prince Charles High School before attending Victoria College to acquire her teaching certificate. Shortly after completing her program, she returned to Creston and began teaching.
About a year later she ran into her high school crush, Bernie Riehl, who had recently returned from Toronto. They were married on April 27, 1963. Together they had five children: Douglas, Marla, Terance, Linda, and Christopher and operated the family dairy until 2015. She was an integral part of the farm operations, first milking cows and later managing the farm finances, all while raising the children.
Karen was an avid traveler, loved to read, and was an active member of the Erickson Covenant Church. She had many friends from her community in Lister, the dairy association, her church, her bridge groups, and the Good Sam Club.
She loved gardening, watercolor painting, and hosting parties. She always welcomed visitors no matter how busy she was. Until the end she hosted weekly family dinners for her large family.
Karen is predeceased by her husband Bernie, son Terance, parents Godfrey and Minnie Samuelson, sister Joan Stuart, brothers-in-law Lonnie Stuart, Bill Huscroft, Raeburn Hendrickson, and sister-in- law Carol Samuelson.
Karen is survived by her children Douglas (Laurie), Marla (Darin) Brooks, Linda (Gary) Cote, Christopher (Sangeun), son-in-law Lyle Peters, Nadine Amy Nicole (Jeremiah) Warrington, Leigh Riehl, Ruqaya Peters, Samuel Riehl, Meredith and Christian Cote, Elias and Ian Riehl, and Dakota and Tyson Brooks as well as eight great-grandchildren.
She will also be remembered by sisters Pat (Ed) Cotton, Diane Hendrickson (Bill Reid), brother Bob Samuelson, sister-in-law Anita Huscroft and many nieces and nephews.
