Jean Herbaut

Jean Herbaut of Creston B.C. passed away on December 16, 2016 at Swan Valley Lodge, at the age of 82 years.

Jean was born in Tourcoing, France on September 7, 1934.

Jean was a child during WWII and experienced the hardships of war. At the age of 14 he started working as a baker. He joined the French Foreign Legion, but had to leave due to a hearing impairment. He then re-established himself as a baker in Lille and Caille France, followed by a career as a hotel manager in Madagascar. Jean then returned to France to work as an insurance salesman and printer. In the late 1970’s he went to Louisiana as a restauranteur. Jean immigrated to Canada in 1980, and worked in Edmonton and Vancouver as a pastry chef. Jean then made the move to Creston in 1995 for his retirement. Jean was married in Tourcoing in 1956, he had five children Eric, Michel, Marc, Carol, and Corinne.

Jean had a number of hobbies such as singing in competitions and local productions, playing cards, family activities, and traveling.


Jean is predeceased by daughter Corinne (1969); father Georges Herbaut; mother Zenaide Raymonde Borne; brothers Henri and Jacques; and sisters Ramone and Janet.

Jean is survived by best friend Rose Pompu; his children Eric, Marc, and Carol of Vancouver, B.C., Michel of Marseille, France; and the extended Pompu family.

A service was held Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Father Sylvester Ibekwe officiating.
