Harlen “Cliff” Gjertsen


October 17, 1925 ~ August 1, 2011


Harlen Clifford Gjertsen passed away peacefully with family by his side on Monday, August 1, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 85 years.


Cliff was born in Orkney, Saskatchewan on October 17, 1925. He joined the Navy as a young man and was a gunner during World War II. Harlen met his wife Joyce in Vancouver and they married in 1945. He was a member of the Vancouver City Police Force for many years. Cliff enjoyed hunting, fishing and doing anything outdoors - especially with his son Ken. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner for over 25 years.


Cliff will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 66 years, Joyce; two daughters, Darlene (Martin) Thiessen, Barb (Dave) Lougheed; one son, Ken (Kari) Gjertsen, as well as seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren whom he loved very much. He also leaves to remember him his one brother Harold (Dagney) Gjertsen and two sisters; Nona Kirby and Irene (Jim) Foster.


An intimate family celebration will be held at a later date.
