Douglas George Herrick

March 15, 1921 ~ December 9, 2010.

Douglas George Herrick passed away on December 9, 2010 after a lengthy illness at the Creston Valley Hospital at the age of 89 years.

On March 15, 1921, Doug was the second of six children to be born on the family homestead near Shaunavon, SK.

After receiving his education in Shaunavon SK, Doug signed up with the South Saskatchewan Regiment and proudly served during World War II with active service in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during 1944-1945. In 1948 he moved to Kitchener, BC with his parents, brothers and sisters and although he did travel for work, has called this home ever since.

Doug worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway as an operator for 31 years and was then very pleased to collect a pension from the “company” for a longer time than he had actually worked for them. Following his retirement, Doug began his bowling career. This activity and the time spent with his friends at the bowling alley meant a great deal to Doug. He very much enjoyed the Senior Bowling League in Creston and particularly liked travelling to various tournaments throughout BC. His bowling trophies and awards held a place of prominence in his home.

Doug was a quiet and giving soul, the “go to guy “ for his family and friends. He was generous to a fault. He could never turn down a plea for help, whether to a worthy charitable cause, or a family member or friend in need. Doug enjoyed “gadgets”, really liked tinkering with machinery and he was always happy to donate his time and equipment to dig a ditch for someone or work on the local municipal water line.

Doug was predeceased by his parents Erna and William Herrick, sister Dolores Carlson, brother Hazen Herrick, brothers-in-law Fred Carlson and Roy Carlson, sister-in-law Roma Herrick, nephews Duane Carlson and Douglas Herrick, foster nephew Joseph Fleury and foster niece Louise Fleury

He will be lovingly remembered by his elder sister, Beryle Carlson of Cranbrook, BC; brothers Kenneth (Ilamae) Herrick of Mesa, Arizona and Bruce (Liz) Herrick of Elkford, BC; six nephews and nieces; one foster niece; eleven grand nieces and nephews and their children.

A Memorial Graveside Service will take place in Creston in the summer of 2011. An announcement with the details will be placed in the Creston Valley Advance prior to Doug’s memorial service.

Doug really loved all animals and was a great supporter of their care and conservation during his lifetime. Any friends wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to P. A. W. S. 2805 Lower Wynndel Rd, Creston, BC, V0B 1G8.
