Doris May Currie

August 19, 1919 ~ March 16, 2010

Doris May Currie passed away peacefully at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson on March 16, 2010 at the age of 90 years.

Doris was born on August 19, 1919 in Woodstock, Ontario to Jane and Walter Hendy and joined older siblings, Eileen and Bert. The family moved to Creston when Doris was two.

Doris married Stewart Currie in 1942 and when Stew came home from the Air Force, they farmed the orchard in Erickson until 1971. Doris was very involved with the Cancer Society and worked at the Erickson Shopping Centre for many years. As Stew’s kidneys began to fail, Doris took on the full time role of nurse, moving to Trail for a year to care for Stew during kidney dialysis treatments and training at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver to become a dialysis technician. Doris’s dedication to family and determination allowed her to bring Stew and the first VLA home dialysis machine back to Creston. The couple spent a good year at home but unfortunately Stew passed away in March, 1973. With her medical training and strong work ethic needing an outlet, Doris began work with Dr. David Perrin at the Creston Veterinary Clinic. The following 15 years were filled with many adventures, many of which have been published by Dave in his “Adventures of a Country Vet” series. Doris was very close to Dave and considered him her adopted son. Upon retirement Doris moved to Nelson to be closer to her daughters and their families. Doris was a wonderful hands-on grandmother, affectionately called Mimi, who was there for all the big events but was always ready for spur of the moment road trips and family dinners “out the lake”.

During her years in Nelson Doris was also very involved with the Cancer Society, the Senior Ladies at Granite Point Golf Course, Kiwanis and the United Church Ladies Group. She also loved to knit. She worked at Cutler’s News for many years with good friend, Grace Smith. Doris loved living at Granite Manor and made many wonderful friends. Doris and Ev Kuhn became Snowbirds together and spent many years traveling to Palm Springs. The proceeding years in Palm Springs were filled with golf and fun with their many friends, Corrine and Don Scheldrup, Bonnie and Bill Hamson, the Turners, Lee and William to name a few. In the most recent years Grace Smith and Doris spent a few winters together in Palm Springs and shared the beauty of southern California with numerous family members.

Doris was predeceased by her husband Stewart Currie; brother Bert and sister Eileen.

She is lovingly remembered by her family; son David (Debbie), Jennifer (Dale); great-grandchildren Taya and Patrick; daughter-in-law Carol Currie; grandchildren Leanne (Tom) and Alan (Diane); great-grandchildren Mikayla and Robbie; daughter Jean (Peter) Mackie; grandchildren Ainsley and Erin (Dustin); daughter Barb (John) Curran; grandchildren Mike and Chris; niece Jacqueline Corrie; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and great, great nephew, Carlo; good friends Ev Kuhn and Grace Smith as well as many friends and “adopted” daughters, Corrine Scheldrup, Shelly Munro and Rose Geworsky.
