April 30, 1941 - December 10, 2024
In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dennis George McDonald on December 10, 2024, at the age of 83.
Dennis was a person who could never be mistaken for anybody else. At 6'5", he stood out in a crowd and was the kind of man that would take on responsibilities because he took those seriously. He carried a sense of calm and confidence that made him a natural leader. Dennis believed strongly in community and carried a passion for the outdoors and conservation throughout his life. This was reflected in his love of fishing and hunting, and in his career as a biologist.
He worked in northeastern Alberta in the 1960s, biologically mapping many of the lakes in the area for the first time. It was during this time that Dennis met his beloved wife of 60 years, Arleane. In the following years, he was instrumental in achieving protection for the Sheep River near Turner Valley and the Bow River below Calgary. For these achievements, he was awarded the Premier's Medal of Excellence.
Dennis and Arleane moved to the Nelson area in 1980, where he worked as B.C. Environment's Regional Director for the Kootenays for 19 years. He chaired a number of key organizations aimed at sustaining fish and wildlife populations, enhancing habitat, and promoting environmental stewardship. In 1999, they moved to the Creston area. Active in community events, flyfishing and golf, they spent their later years pursuing many interests, travelling abroad, and visiting with family and friends.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Arleane, his son Darcy, daughter-in-law Anne-Marie, and granddaughter Andrea.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Friends wishing to make a memorial donation may do so to The Nature Conservancy of Canada - https://www.natureconservancy.ca/en/
