Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Kootenays, with high winds expected.

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning that extends to the Kootenays, West Columbia, East Columbia, and Yoho Park to Kootenay Park for the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 25.

“A vigorous cold front will cross the province today bringing with it very strong winds aloft," an Environment Canada spokesperson said. "While most areas will see fairly strong wind gusts of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour, locally, wind gusts may reach 90 kilometres per hour, aided by thunderstorms or showers that help drag the very strong winds aloft down to the surface.”

Environment Canada warns that such strong wind gusts could potentially lead to broken tree limbs and power outages, and warns boaters to be cautious of sudden strong gusts over lakes and motorists to be advised of strong cross winds over highways.

"Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage," they said. "High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches. Motorists, especially in high profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong cross winds."

This warning was in addition to the special weather statement issued earlier Wednesday, warning of a late season thunderstorm potential, for Fraser Canyon, North and South Thompson, Nicola Valley, Similkameen, Okanagan Valley, Shuswap, Columbias, Kootenays, Yellowhead during the day and areas east of Golden and Creston during the night.
