With five days of cycling behind him, Adam Beaudoin spent Aug. 11 recovering with Creston's Leoux family before moving on. The 17-year-old braved three mountain passes — Bonanza, Bombi and Kootenay — on the fifth day of a crosscountry journey to raise money for cancer research, arriving in Creston on Aug. 10.

Cancer has affected the teen greatly, with a friend recently diagnosed with leukemia, a girl in his class diagnosed for a second time, and two aunts dealing with the disease.

Beaudoin left his hometown of Victoria on Aug. 5, and had raised $5,000 by the time he arrived in Creston. Donors can donate trough his blog, and family friend Steve Clark will match donations dollar for dollar, up to a total of $23,000.

The journey, which he expected to take a month, is a big deal for anyone, but the teen travelling mostly alone was modest about his effort.

“The actions of young people today will shape our future,” he said.
