Creston’s Special Olympics BC program is starting programs for children aged two to 12, and is looking for participants, providing encouragement for both parents and children.

“It’s important for parents to network,” said co-ordinator Karley Ferner. “It can be a difficult thing to go through when you have young kids.

On April 21 from 10-11 a.m., parents can stop by the Sunshine Room at the Creston and District Community Complex to register their children in the Special Olympics Active Start and Fundamentals programs.

About 30 people in Creston currently participate in Special Olympics, and many are active in the three main sports of bowling, swimming and floor hockey. The children’s program has been defunct for a few years, and organizers are looking forward to starting it again.

In addition to participants, Ferner is also looking for volunteers to help with the programs. Each must be prepared to give one hour each week.

“They just help the athletes go through the different activities,” she said. “They have to help set it up. They’re there for any questions parents might have.”
