Hats off to our sponsors!

It’s always a great feeling when you get to hand out some money instead of asking for it.

Creston and District Community Complex

It’s always a great feeling when you get to hand out some money instead of asking for it – in this case, it is because of our advertising sponsor for the Zamboni - Pharmasave Creston. As part of the agreement, the revenue from the advertising wrap on the Ice Resurfacer gets spread around the community with a portion going to support Creston Valley Minor Hockey, Creston Valley Figure Skating and the Creston Valley Thundercats. As well, a portion goes towards providing six free Pharmasave public skates over the season and the remainder goes to a reserve fund to help with the replacement cost of the Zamboni down the road when required.

Now in the third year of the arrangement, we are pleased to see the positive impact the sponsorship has made to the community with the ongoing support to ice user groups and the contribution to the ice resurfacer replacement. As well, through free public skate sessions, we are able to provide greater accessibility to skating by reducing financial barriers which in turn can spark an interest that leads to more participation in the various ice user groups. In turn, the sponsor builds awareness, increases positive exposure and demonstrates their commitment to Health and Community Wellness through recreation and sport. We are also fortunate enough to have some different sponsorships for some free swimming every so often over the season (but there’s always room for more!)

Wasn’t that a great Fall Fair and Art Show with lots of cool things to see? Now we hunker down for the long run with regular ice users in the arena and preparations starting for the curling ice to go in. We have a couple exciting Jr. B hockey games this Friday and Saturday as the Thundercats take on Sicamous then Spokane. Many recreation and fitness programs have started or will shortly but there is still availability in many so give us a shout at 250-428-7127 if you have questions about anything.

Over the next few weeks, we will be updating you on what the progress has been on the Community Park. Over the past months there has been steady design work with reviews happening on a regular basis; lots of research on court sizes and layouts, electrical and utility requirements and designs, elevations and accesses, foliage requirements and recommendations, retaining strategies and of course, at the Complex, we are always thinking about long-term operations and maintenance once the party’s over and everyone goes home. A few of the long-term considerations we will have to address are items like cleaning the skatepark of debris or stuff that blows in, getting equipment to areas that need mowing or rethinking ground cover, maintaining or closing some pathways in the winter months and having provisions or infrastructure in place for future improvements in 5, 10 or 15 years as examples.

Thanks for your continuing patience as we work with our new registration and facility booking software – we are making progress as we identify and iron out some of the kinks as well as changes from what we were used to with the old software. Back in 2001, a developer wrote an essay “Good Software Takes Ten Years. Get Used To it.” which is probably has an element of truth in looking back on our previous CLASS software (as well as Oracle, Lotus and even Facebook). It all is workable initially but through a constant process of tweaks, adjustments and adaptations over its life, it gets really good and provides more value than the predecessor. Like raising kids – am I’m not just saying that because I’m the baby of the family…
