A 57-year-old man died tragically on New Year’s Eve at his Gray Creek residence when he was crushed by the vehicle he was working on.
“It looks like the vehicle might have started to roll and he attempted to stop it,” Const. Andrew Jones, who attended the scene, said on Tuesday.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the accident is being invested by the BC Coroners Service, RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said.
Police Beat
Creston RCMP responded to 150 calls from Dec. 19-Jan. 2 in a holiday season dominated by alcohol-related disputes and non-emergency 911 calls, Gollan said.
He also mentioned that he has been informed that the Royal Canadian Legion is in fact conducting a telephone solicitation campaign to raise funds for a war memorial. This information is contrary to what Gollan was told by a local legion member last month.
December 19
•When police located a reported erratic driver on Dogwood Street, the youth’s father was brought into the discussion and a verbal warning was issued.
•A person who was reported to be walking dogs on private property on Nick’s Island North Road has been advised that she is trespassing.
•The owner of a vehicle with a loud muffler on 15th Avenue North has been served notice to have it repaired.
•A break and entry to a Highway 3A residential garage netted thieves a motorcycle, bicycle and numerous tools.
December 20
•Outdoor Christmas decorations in the form of two polar bears and two penguins, valued at $150, were stolen from an 11th Avenue South yard.
•When police conducted a well-being check on Highway 3 they found the resident was ill, but not in jeopardy.
•Police were called to a domestic argument on Seventh Avenue North but no assault occurred.
•Patrolling police stopped a vehicle on Helen Street and found that one of the occupants was the subject of several arrest warrants. He was arrested and held until a hearing could be held with a justice of the peace.
December 21
•Two suspicious males were reported to be pulling something heavy on the railway tracks near Birch Street, but police were unable to locate them or the item.
•A semi that struck a pickup truck and shopping cart in a Northwest Boulevard parking lot was located. The driver was issued a ticket for failing to remain at the scene.
•An unoccupied mobile home on Canyon-Lister Road was entered by vandals, who smashed all the windows and damaged the interior.
•Police located an intoxicated male who caused a disturbance at the hospital before leaving. He was taken to his home.
•The driver of a vehicle located on 15th Avenue North was issued a ticket for having no insurance or registration papers.
December 22
•Police received a complaint that a landscaped hill on 11th Avenue South is being used by youths as a jump.
•Foster Grant prescription sunglasses were found on Ash Street and can be claimed at the police station by their owner.
•A small red lunch cooler with a white lid was lost on 16th Avenue.
•A hit and run damaged a parked car in the hospital parking lot.
•A curfew check on a Muzzy Road resident revealed the male was not at home.
December 23
•A vehicle pulling out onto Highway 21 South struck another vehicle, causing more than $1,000 in damage.
•“Congratulations to Creston drivers. That’s what we like to see,” was Gollan’s comment after 50 vehicles were checked at a roadside check on Canyon Street and no infractions were found.
•Missing the turn to continue on Highway 3 at Curzon Junction by a Nelson resident cost the driver the small quantity of marijuana he was carrying when he arrived at the Kingsgate border junction unintentionally. No charges were laid.
•A vehicle that swerved to avoid a coyote on Lister Road went off the road and landed on its side, resulting in extensive damage. No injuries were reported.
December 24
•A male who was reported to be walking on Erickson Road and butting his head against traffic signs was gone when police arrived.
•A vehicle struck another from behind on an icy Vancouver Street, pushing it against the Masonic Lodge, which sustained minor damage. Both vehicles were damaged but no injuries resulted.
•A vehicle went off Highway 3 near Kingsgate and came to rest on its side. The occupants were taken to hospital to be checked.
•Neighbours were able to extinguish a house fire on Silvercrest Road. No one was home at the time and significant damage resulted.
December 25
•Icy road conditions and no winter tires were attributed as the causes for a vehicle to go off Highway 3 near Leadville Forest Service Road and roll onto its roof. No injuries were reported.
•Children playing with phones were blamed for 911 calls from 32nd Avenue South and Whimster Road residences.
•Police were unable to locate a red Ford Sable reported to be driving erratically on Highway 3 about 10 kilometres west of Creston.
•A Ford Aerostar driving erratically on Northwest Boulevard and Cook Street was not located. Police had no more luck in finding a white Dodge pickup in the 16th Avenue South area.
December 26
•Minor damage resulted when a vehicle backed into another on Highway 3.
•A male in a black hoodie reported to be staggering on Erickson Road was located and driven home.
•Participants in two fights outside a Ninth Avenue pub were gone when police arrived.
December 27
•The host of a loud party on Vancouver Street refused to open the door of the house, and then turned the music louder. He or she will be dealt with by the Town of Creston bylaw department.
•An intoxicated female on Eighth Avenue South who could not be restrained by a family member was arrested for her safety and held in police cells until sober.
•A Hagy Road resident reported losing a diamond ring sometime between Nov. 11 and Dec. 27.
•Police were called when two males were reported to have made threats to a third male. A female was apparently the subject of the dispute.
•An intoxicated male who cut his head when he fell in the 1800 block of Canyon Street was taken to hospital for treatment, then held in police cells until he was sober.
December 28
•Three pieces of heavy machinery were burned while parked on Cracker-jack Forest Service Road near Crawford Bay. Damage is estimated at $250,000.
•No assault was determined to have occurred in an argument between a male and female that led to a 911 call from Newman Street.
•The intoxicated driver of a green Ford Aerostar on Clement Road was issued a three-day driving prohibition.
•When police responded to a 911 call from Canyon Street, the resident had no explanation for how the call was made.
