What experience do you have that would make you an effective councillor?

With over 25 years both as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP, I have a number of skill sets I believe could be put to use for the betterment of our community.

Communicator — A large part of my career involved resolving issues through communication. I am a good listener, have an open mind, and have empathy, respect and compassion for all involved.

Financially aware — I fully understand financial statements and budgets and why the proper management of them is so crucial to the healthy life of a family, workplace or municipality.

Negotiator — For over 25 years, much of my time was spent finding common ground for conflict resolution and problem solving.

Innovative thinker — Thinking beyond what you can see and finding innovative ways to tackle issues are things I am very familiar with. I expect this may be useful around the council table in the months to come.

What is your top priority for the next town council?

I believe there are many ways to improve Creston’s financial position, starting with a close examination of all expenditures. Fiscal responsibility is at the top of my priority list.

Should the Creston Valley have a single, locally managed form of government?

At the present time, I believe the Regional District of Central Kootenay and Creston town council should remain separate. I am not aware of this issue being top of mind for valley residents and I believe that is crucial before any time, effort or money is spent in entertaining this idea.

How many council/committee meetings have you attended in 2014?

I have attended two council meetings. The development cost charges meeting was of particular interest to me. The proposed significant increase in these charges, in my opinion, will negatively affect any potential growth in Creston. Creston needs to roll out the welcome mat to attract new business and I feel this cost increase will be a step in the wrong direction.
