Although other activities will take place as planned, Creston residents will not enjoy the much-anticipated Canada Day fireworks display this year. The Ministry of Forests' fire ban in the area prompted the Town of Creston to cancel Wednesday's event

"We understand the fireworks cancellation is disappointing; however, with the extreme heat in the short- and long-term forecasts for this area, it is imperative that all precautions are taken to keep our community and citizens safe," said Creston mayor Ron Toyota in a press release.

The display will be rescheduled for a later date, when fire conditions are less hazardous.

"On behalf of council and the Creston Valley Spirit Committee, the Town of Creston thanks everyone for their understanding and co-operation," said Toyota.

Other activities that will go ahead include family events including a 22-foot waterslide, a 36-foot obstacle course and face painting, which run 1-5 p.m. at the Creston and District Community COmplex, which also offers free swimming from 4-6 p.m.

the opening ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. with Emma Kade performing "O Canada", followed by free Canada Day cake. A live concert from 8-10:15 p.m. features Stormcrow and Legion.

In Canyon Park, Canada Day events include a pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m., a slo-pitch tournament starting at 8 a.m. and a gymkhana at 11a.m.
