The best figure skaters in the Kootenays will be competing at the Creston & District Community Complex this weekend, all vying to go on to higher level competitions.

“We have been hosting the competition in Creston for three years to try and ease the major travel in the Kootenays,” organizer Leanne Beddie said on Monday. “Creston is the most central community. One event that makes the Kootenay competition special is our team event, scheduled Saturday evening from 6-7 pm. It allows the teams of the region to put in one group number. Skating is typically such an individual sport, so the team event is very unique and great fun to watch. I highly recommend people come out for the team event—the energy in the arena is fantastic! We even have one team with 31 skaters this year, which will be a special feat to watch!”

The Kootenay Figure Skating Championships start this Friday and run through 1:30 on Sunday afternoon. About 150 skaters are registered to skate for the weekend, and competitors will arrive from all over the Kootenays.

“For the regional championships, only skaters from a particular region can attend. Then the Regional Team will be selected to head to the Super Series Final in Kelowna from March 1-3, where our Kootenay team will compete against all the other teams in British Columbia/ Yukon.”

The ladies’ short programs are Saturday morning and starting at 2:00 pm Saturday are the long programs, followed by Bronze interpretive skating that will be an excellent showcase of Kootenay talent.

On Sunday morning from 9-11 the silver and gold interpretive programs, which feature a fantastic mix of music, are scheduled.

“For anyone who loves to watch dance Sunday, 11:00-1:30, will be all dance programs,” Beddie said. “On Friday and Saturday we will have a raffle table and 50/50 raising funds for our skater development seminar that we also host in Creston every year, so we encourage people to come by and get some tickets.”
