The Erickson Elementary School parent advisory council is raising funds for a new playground.

Out with the old, in with the new. That’s the plan of the Erickson Elementary School (EES) parent advisory council (PAC), which has embarked on a mission to raise funds for a new primary playground.

The current playground, which passersby rarely see because it’s around back, is too tall for young children and the decaying structure is giving them splinters.

“Ours is still one of the old log playgrounds,” said PAC president Sabrina Damery, who often takes her three children to play on the Adam Robertson Elementary School playground. “It wasn’t built for the ages using it.”

The proposed new playground will be like others installed at local schools, made of metal and plastic — but it comes at a cost of about $40,000.

A few fundraisers have already been held — and the PAC has discussed the project with the Creston Valley Rotary Club, which sponsors the school’s breakfast program — the most recent being hanging baskets from Beltane Nursery for Mother’s Day. Next up is a car wash, which will run at EES from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 31.
