A man has been charged for allegedly causing a high-speed fatal collision near Cranbrook that killed a man and injured his wife a year ago on Canada Day.

Huston Robert Seymour, 34, is facing six charges that include dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and operating a motor vehicle while impaired.

According to RCMP, the collision happened on Highway 3/93 near Mayook, a rural neighbourhood east of Cranbrook, just before 11:30 p.m. on July 1, 2023.

BC Highway Patrol investigators allege that the suspect was driving alone in an eastbound pickup truck when he crossed into oncoming traffic and caused a head-on collision with a westbound SUV.

The driver of the SUV, a 42-year-old Calgary man, was killed, while his wife reported non-life-threatening injuries. Both vehicles were totalled and the pickup truck was destroyed by fire in the aftermath.

"Evidence gathered by BC Highway Patrol supports the theory that a combination of speed and alcohol was the primary cause of this catastrophic crash," said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. "It is hard to imagine a sadder scenario than losing a loved one beside you in a vehicle."

Seymour will have a court appearance in Cranbrook on Dec. 2. He is considered innocent until proven otherwise in court.
