Creston Town Council gave staff its blessing to proceed with at least 10 zoning changes at the May 21 regular council meeting.
Most of the properties have zoning designations that aren’t compatible or in line with neighbouring properties. A business building at the corner of Cook Street and 16th Avenue South, for instance, is still zoned Industrial because it was once a part of the Crestbrook Mill site.
“All of these properties have been overlooked at some point, and we have been going through the roles as a matter of housekeeping,” said Ross Beddoes, Director of Municipal Services.” There are still more to deal with, but in these cases, the property owners support the zoning amendments—we aren’t proceeding at this point with any property owners that aren’t sure they will benefit from a zoning amendment.”
A public meeting will be held this summer to hear any concerns from neighbouring property owners in each case.
In other Town Council news:
• Council approved a recommendation from the Technical Building Advisory Committee to use the existing Design Development Report previously prepared by Johnston Davidson Architecture. The design will be amended for space allotment as recommended by the previous Community Fire Hall Advisory Select Committee. It will include space for the ambulance service after the Town of Creston recently got confirmation that the BC Ambulance Service wants to be part of the new fire hall.
• Council approved staff to proceed with an application in concert with the RDCK to get funding to a new housing demand needs analysis and supply analysis. The project will identify housing needs throughout the Central Kootenay.
• Council voted to receive for information a request for support by the City of Burnaby to get changes under the Community Charter that would allow municipalities to invest in a wider range of financial vehicles than are currently available.
• Highway 3 from 10th to 16th Avenue North and Spirit Square on 11th Avenue North will be closed for a period of time on June 22 so that a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser can take place. In Creston, the event is sponsored by Kootenai Community Centre Society and funds raised will support Irvine House and Older Women’s Safe Homes.
• The annual swap meet for car enthusiasts will again be accommodated on the parking lots north and south of Millennium Park and the field in front of the RCMP detachment. If registrations are high Cedar Street will also be closed for the August 24 event.
