In what has become a bi-annual Christmas season tradition, the Canadian Holiday Train will include Creston in its cross-country tour on Tuesday, December 12.

Headlining the entertainment on the British Columbia leg of the tour is Alan Doyle and the Beautiful Band. Doyle, best known for his work with Great Big Sea, also plays with actor/singer Russell Crowe on short tours called the Indoor Garden Party.

Operated by Canadian Pacific, the Holiday Train will visit more than 170 communities in Canada and the US this year, contributing to local food banks and collecting donations as it moves along. All local donations stay with the Creston Food Bank.

Since 1999, the efforts of CP and its employees have raised more than $13 million and 4 million pounds of food for North American food banks.

“Hunger is an issue that can, and does, impact all of our neighbours,” CP says on its web site. “The Holiday Train program has gained a tremendous following in the close to two decades that it’s been running. The Holiday Train shines a bright light on the importance of supporting food banks. In some places the Holiday Train program can raise the majority of money a food bank requires for the year.“

CP invites residents who attend the free performance to bring non-perishable food or cash to donate to Creston’s Food Bank.

The 2017 tour is scheduled to arrive near Millennium Park (kitty corner from the RCMP station) at 9:45 a.m. on December 12, with the half-hour performance starting at 10 a.m.

Residents who would like to see night-time performances, with the Christmas-lit train in all its splendor, can drive to Cranbrook on December 11 for the 9:30 p.m. performance, or Nelson, for the 6:45 show at Lakeside Park on December 12.
