The Creston Arts Council will be hosting a Juried Student Art Show this coming November 16 & 17 in the Erickson room at the Rec Centre during the Arts Council’s Christmas Craft Fair.

The theme for the Juried Art Show is Indigo and it is open to all students from grades 7 to 12. We are hoping to have students from all over the valley participate whether they are home-schooled or attending a public school; whether they are taking art or have never taken art - everyone in those grades is welcome! Two catches - the art must fit the theme of Indigo and it must be properly presented for display. The art will be judged by an independent committee and 3 local businesses( Creston Card and Stationary, the Art Barn Studio and 4 Corners Matting and Framing) will each be donating a prize for the winners.

To help students prepare for the Art Show a few local artists will be offering Free Workshops during September and October. Materials will be supplied for most of the workshops but if participants need to bring something they will be informed at registration. Instructors will offer guidelines and ideas but each student will do an artwork of their choice - anything goes! Students must pre-register for these workshops. Here are the dates for the workshops and as they are not that far away please register soon. The workshops will all be held Saturday afternoons but exact times and locations will be given at registration.

On Sept. 15 Val van der Poel will instruct a double workshop in Watercolour & Acrylics; students can decide which medium they prefer. Call Val at 250 866-5772 to register. On Sept. 29 Brenda Brucker, Emmie Roelofse and others will guide the students in Blue Jeans Art. Call Brenda at 250 428-3358 to register. Oct 6 brings an exciting chance to Dye Fabric with Indigo. Instructed by Anne Fetterley and Brenda Brucker, students will dye scarves, t-shirts or other interesting things that will fit the theme of the Juried Art Show and also be useful. Call Brenda at 250 428-3358 to register - please note the dyeing workshop is only open to grades 8 to 12. And finally on Oct. 20 a special workshop on Presenting your Art –with instruction from Alison Szpak from 4 Corners Matting and Framing. Call Val at 250 866-5772 to register. This workshop is important for hanging art as work that is not properly presented will not be accepted into the Juried Art Show.

Exhibitors to the art show do not have to attend these workshops but they will help to make the event more informative and exciting for participants.

The Juried Student Art Show will be kicking off the celebrations for the Creston Arts Council’s 50th Anniversary in 2019 and we are hoping for a fabulous student art display to start us off with a bang! To find out more stop by the Arts Council booth at the Fall Fair or call one of the numbers above.
