Creston RCMP responded to 86 calls from May 23-28, said Staff Sgt. Gord Stewart, none more unusual than having to place a young moose in a holding cell while they awaited instructions from a conservation officer.

The incident began when a 52nd Street resident reported that the baby moose appeared to have been abandoned. Strangely, he made the report in person, with the moose in his vehicle.

Unable to contact conservation officers for direction, Const. Dan Cameron made the decision to temporarily place the animal in a cell. It was unclear whether the moose was actually read its rights — or, indeed, whether a youthful moose has rights — before being locked up.

The moose was later returned to where it was found at the recommendation of a local conservation officer.
