Six Kootenay golfers competed in the BC Summer Games in Maple Ridge from July 17 to 21. The athletes represented Golden, Nakusp, Creston, Trail, and Grand Forks this year. The Kootenay Zone was coached once again by Kevin Nesbitt of the Champion Lakes Golf Course. Over 3 days, golfers competed at the Meadow Gardens Golf Club in Pitt Meadows and had the challenge of competing against athletes from all over the province.
With 44 golfers in attendance, Creston resident, Ashlyn Rejman (who also attended the Prince George Summer Games in 2022), finished in 14th place after two days of competition in her division. The Kootenay Zone Region had an overall sixth-place finish. The competition was intense, and there were moments when the team had to adjust their game to accommodate new conditions. Competing at sea level forced the team to adapt their overall game strategies, as the high humidity and different elevation were far from what they were accustomed to living in the Kootenays. With over 4,000 young athletes in attendance for 2024, the summer games provided opportunities and experiences these young athletes will remember forever.
To see this many young athletes compete in a variety of sports and skill levels was amazing. It was an opportunity to showcase their communities through the game of golf proudly.
