Kootenay River Secondary School's (KRSS) Cross Country runners are gearing up for an exciting weekend.

On Nov. 2, the team left to Vancouver for the BC School Sports Cross Country Senior Boys AA Provincial Championships.

The boys secured their spot after an impressive performance at the Kootenay Zones held at the Salmo District Golf Club on Oct. 21. The five-kilometre race in Salmo was quite gruelling as it was not an endurance run, nor a sprint.

Several runners - Lucien Catherall, Ethan Bailey, and Aidan Hammond - “ran up” to compete in the senior boys category even as Grade 10s. Catherall stood out with an exceptional finish, clocking in at 19:58.7, just 16 seconds shy of the AAA boys' winner. Zane Antal, Bailey, and Hammond also showcased their drive, finishing closely behind him. Additionally, Josh Leavitt and Hart Christiansen displayed remarkable determination, sprinting the final 200 meters to achieve personal bests.

With their team’s strong performance, the boys will travel to Vancouver this weekend alongside coach Trevor Marzke and a dedicated parent volunteer. The KRSS Cross Country team would like to extend their gratitude to Natasha and Garret Huscroft for their generous support in providing transportation for the trip.

The team looks forward to representing KRSS, Creston, and the Kootenay Zone at the provincial meet, showcasing their hard work and dedication on a larger stage.
