The results are in for the two names elected to the Lower Kootenay Band’s council.

Leona Basil will be a new face, while Cherie (Inismi) Luke has been re-elected to serve another term.

On Nov. 19, the polls were closed at 7 p.m. and votes were quickly tallied. A total of 59 ballots were cast, including 37 for Luke and 23 for Basil. Councillor Josie Fullarton did not join the nomination list for the election and will not be returning.

The remaining ballots were split between three other contenders - 16 for Lisa Three Feathers, 15 for Andrew Phypers, and 13 for Sandra Luke.

Council continues to be led by Nasukin Jason Louie, who was elected to lead again in 2022. Rounding out the five-person team are councillors Chad Luke and Robin Louie, voted in that same year.

Every two years, LKB holds an election for those on council who have finished serving a four-year term, including the chief. This recurrent process allows LKB council to have newly elected members more frequently than in most traditional settings.
