At the end of August, we wrapped up another successful Summer Reading Club program. During the final week of programming, the kids celebrated by blasting off baking soda-induced bottle rockets, posing for photos with their medals, and grazing on goodies donated by our community sponsors. With Summer Reading Club over and cooler weather creeping in, we’re already planning for fall here at the library. However, there are still some summer loose ends that we need to tie up before we fully switch into autumn mode.
For example, we need a new gardener! Are you a keen gardener looking to connect and contribute to your community? The gorgeous Reading Garden at the back of our library has been lovingly tended to by our volunteer gardener, Bren Lukasiewich and her team of volunteers, over the past few years. After this season they are ready to hang up their hats (thank you for your service), and we’re looking for someone to take over.
Here’s what’s involved:
• 2 to 3 hours of labour per week
• Materials and equipment expenses covered
• A small monthly stipend during the spring and summer months
• Creative control of all the flower/plant beds in the garden
• Tree pruning and lawn maintenance covered by our landscapers
• Orientation by previous gardener
Another loose end that we’re still tying up is our flooring renovation. The dirty old carpet is gone and all the new flooring has been installed. The painting is almost done and our collections and computers are starting to be reassembled and put back in place. Our new Teen Space is open and in regular use by youth in our community, while our other patrons are already enjoying the new, central location for our Large Print collection, surrounded by pretty plants, with cozy seating.
In celebration of our wonderful patrons, who have been very patient and understanding during the renovation upheavals over the past few months, we are hosting a Patron Appreciation Day! On Saturday, September 21 from 1 to 4 p.m., we will be hosting an open house with harp music, snacks, and door prizes. It’s a chance to come and check out how the renovations have improved the space. Maybe it’s also a chance for you to revisit the library if you haven’t used our services in a while. We’ve worked really hard over the past few months to create a library space that makes sense to all the members of our community who use our services and we are looking forward to showing it off. We hope to see you there!
Finally, the Friends of the Library and our Library Board will be attending the Fall Fair coming up on Sept. 6 and 7. I’ve heard that there will be a prize draw, as well as the opportunity to sign up for a library card or our email newsletter. If you’re planning on going to the Fall Fair, please stop by our library table to say “hello.” I know the Friends and the Board will be happy to see you!
