LETTER: Save Creston's Trinity United Church

Trinity United Church is at risk of closing its doors forever

Creston's Trinity United Church is at risk of closing down.

For years, many people thought of Trinity United as the church by the post office. In 2013, when Trinity Treasures opened, people started to think of it as the church with the thrift store. In 2015, it was remembered as the church that burned down in a fire. In 2022, when unhoused people started to camp on our lawn, people thought of Trinity United as a refuge. Now, the Den Society rents space for two hours a day to provide food and warmth for the unhoused, and many of the volunteers helping with this say that Trinity United is doing what churches should be doing.

In the many years Trinity United has been at 128 10 Ave. N, it has gone through many phases. In the 1960s, it had a large congregation with many families. Many residents will remember going to Sunday School at Trinity while their parents attended service. Unfortunately, our congregation has aged and the number of people coming to our weekly services has decreased drastically. Of course, this means that the money to operate our church is down drastically. Besides that, we have another big problem and that is the lack of volunteers on our church council. We have a wonderful dedicated group of people who have been on the council too long. In the past, there were as many as 12 people sitting on our council but now we are down to six. In March when the new council is elected, the church will not have enough officials to continue.

At the present time, we are lucky to have Reverend Ken Jones as our minister. He travels from Nelson three weeks a month to run our services, do visitations etc. Besides being well liked by our members, he also does the crystal bowl meditations on Saturday evenings when he is in town, which attracts the public.

It would be a terrible shame and a huge loss to Creston if Trinity United Church has to close. We have spent the past year worrying about this possibility and have come up with no solutions. Now we are going public in the hopes that there is someone who would like to become part of our caring core to keep Trinity United Church running. If you have ideas on how to help, get in touch by calling 250-428-4015.
