Five ways to celebrate Father's Day in Creston

Because dad deserves more than a “thanks, I guess”

Don't forget - the annual Karz in the Kootz Father's Day Car Show will be set up downtown from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 15.

Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 15 this year — a chance to show appreciation for the dads, stepdads, grandpas, uncles, and other father figures who’ve guided us with their wisdom, corny jokes, and unconditional support.

If you’re flying by the seat of your pants, here are five fun, local ways to make the day memorable (without much planning required):

1. Cast a line together

If your dad’s an outdoorsman, a spontaneous fishing trip might be just the thing. Grab the tackle box and head to one of his favourite local spots — or surprise him with a membership to the Creston Valley Rod & Gun Club and plan an outing to Mawson Lake. Even if the fish aren’t biting, the time to talk (or sit in companionable silence) is a gift in itself.

2. Backyard barbecue

Let dad kick back while you take over the grill for once. Invite the family, fire up the barbecue, and grab some premium meats from Famous Fritz Meats & Deli.

If propane and fire is more of a liability for you... move the party indoors and order takeout from Tim’s Fish and Chips or Jimmy’s Pub. Comfort food is always sure to hit the spot. Just make sure dad doesn't have to cook!

3. Cheers to the good ol' days

If your dad enjoys a good pint, take him to Wild North Brewing Co. for a tasting flight. Or check out Sternwheeler Craft Distillery, if he’s more into gin, vodka, or brandy. Be sure to buy his favourites to take home.

For more one-on-one time instead, try build your own tasting experience at home: pick out a mix of interesting craft beers from local liquor stores, then create a charcuterie board with goodies from Bindoya Meats & Treats.

4. Let the games begin

If your dad’s a competitor at heart, set up a family game day. From cornhole in the backyard to card games at the kitchen table, there’s something for everyone. Stop by Creston Card & Stationery to pick up a new board game or puzzle. Add in some snacks, a scoreboard, and a few lighthearted prizes — and you’ve got a Father’s Day showdown for the books.

5. Movie night

Does your dad have a soft spot for action flicks or classic comedies? Queue up his favourites for an at-home movie night. Pile on the pillows and blankets or take things outside with a projector and a white sheet for that backyard drive-in vibe.

And did you know – Tivoli Theatre offers takeout popcorn, so you can surprise him with the real hot, buttery goodness only found there.
