The BC SPCA says a West Kootenay breeder has surrendered 11 labradoodle puppies that it could not care for.
The five-month-old puppies were bred southwest of Nelson and handed over to BC SPCA on Dec. 19. In a statement, BC SPCA senior manager Jamey Blair said the breeder could not find homes for the dogs, nor could they afford to keep them.
Blair described the dogs on arrival as "fearful, trembling and urinating."
"They are clearly under socialized, but they took comfort from the BC SPCA staff who were handling them as they were examined for any injuries or possible health issues.”
The puppies have since received baths, vaccinations and treatment for intestinal parasites, as well as leash training.
“They play so nicely together," said Blair. "It has been such a joy to watch them come out of their shells. We are starting to see them show more of their personalities.”
The puppies will be available for adoption in early 2025. BC SPCA said an anonymous donor is matching all donations to help the puppies and other animals up to $250,000.
