Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it First Nation and B.C Wildfire Service are undertaking a few prescribed burns near Grasmere, to help promote ecosystem resilience during fire season.
There will be four spot-sized burn projects launched in April, approximately nine kilometres southwest of Grasmere, covering up to 0.2 hectares.
B.C Wildfire Service notes the timing of the burns will be dependent on weather and site conditions, but could start as early as Apr. 15. The projects will help gather site-specific information on low-intensity spring burning of invasive plants sprayed with herbicide.
Smoke may be visible near the burn area in Grasmere and surrounding communities, and to motorists travelling on Highway 93. It may linger for a few days, particularly the morning after.
B.C Wildfire Service undertakes regular fuel management projects, including prescribed burns, to help reduce the severity of future wildfires.
