Okanagan alternative and groove rock duo Windborn is offering a concert and pre-show question-and-answer session at the Snoring Sasquatch on March 30.

Featuring Jeff Pike (guitar, vocals, percussion) and Nils Loewen (cello, vocals, percussion), Windborn has proven to be very difficult to define. You really have to catch the energy of a live Windborn performance before you can understand what Windborn is all about. Whether it’s a mellow house concert or a pub, the energy and strength of the music is undeniable.

Pike’s guitar playing lays the foundation of every song and is truly unique. He plays rhythm and lead lines at the same time with some of the biggest and most percussive riffs you’ll ever hear on the guitar. He lays complex beats with a kick drum while cutting through with powerful vocals. On top of all of that, Loewen adds bass lines, melodies, harmonies and percussion to the mix with his own unique style on the cello.

Pike toured as a one-man band for years and was told quite often that he should never add anything to his show, that the size of the sound coming from just one musician was unique, but he had always wanted to add cello to his music.

Loewen joined Windborn in 2011, having just finished a three-year music degree in Winnipeg when Pike was touring through. They had a couple of jam sessions before Pike got back on the road and a few months later Loewen made the move to B.C. to join Windborn.

Windborn has three albums released with a fourth on its way. They’ve played almost everywhere there is to play in Western Canada. Collectively, they’ve opened for some big names in Canadian music.

Pike and Loewen know how to put on a show that can suit any type of venue — they know what they’re doing and they’re doing it very well.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students for the concert, and $15 for adults and $10 for students for the concert and Q-and-A, available at the door only. The Q-and-A starts at 5:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7.
