Friends of the Cinema kicks off its 2012-13 season when it screens We Have a Pope, an unusual twist on the usual competition among cardinals to assume the office.

What happens when the elected successor refuses to assume the papacy? Chaos arises when Cardinal Melville, a long shot who rises to the top after several ballots, has a panic attack and refuses to make the expected appearance on the balcony at St. Peter’s.

This Italian-made comedy explores the behind the scenes machinations of papal selection and the lengths his electors go to in an effort to get Melville to take the job.

We Have a Pope is the first of eight films arranged by Friends of the Cinema, which, for the first time, will be shown at Prince Charles Theatre. A free presentation earlier in the summer got a thumbs-up for the venue from those who attended.

Films are shown on the third Monday of each month, September through May (December excluded) and attendance is by season’s pass or ticket sales at the door.

A new addition to this season’s screenings is the possibility that locally-made short films will be shown in addition to the feature presentation. Anyone who has a potential presentation can drop a note off at the Creston and District Public Library.

We Have a Pope will be presented on Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Season’s passes for Friends of the Cinema and Creston Concert Society will be on sale at the Creston Valley Fall Fair.
